Chance Threet
Chance Wayne Threet died Sept. 30, 2009 in a truck and trailer accident in Hugo, Colo. while hauling cattle to Lamar for his college’s rodeo. Chance was born in Canon City on Jan. 29, 1989 to Rod and Charlene Threet . He grew up in Florence and graduated from Florence High School in 2007. He loved sports and participated in football, baseball, basketball and wrestling. He was also a member of the 2006 State Champion Florence Husky Football Team.
In addition to his school sports, Chance was also active in 4-H and showed sheep, pigs and steers. He showed two steers that won reserve grand champion titles and a grand champion market steer his final year in the program.
He also enjoyed roping and participated in the Little Britches Rodeo Association, Colorado Junior rodeo Association and the Colorado High School Rodeo Association.
Chance was in his third year at Lamar Junior College working towards a double major in Horse Training Management and Agricultural Business. As a member of the Lamar Community College Rodeo Team he competed in team ropin, calf roping and steer wrestling. He was a member of the Lamar Community College Rodeo team-competing in team roping, calf roping, and steer wrestling. Chance was chosen as the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Assocation, Central Rocky Mountain Region Team Roping Director.
Chance is survived by his parents; brothers, Chris Lane, Peyton Threet and Zach Crofoot; grandmother, Ruth Threet; nephew, Eli James Lane; aunts and uncles, Jim (Pam) Threet, Martha (Berl) Peterson, Dianna (Mark) and Heinen, Beckie (David) Sandoval and Kate Wills; his girlfriend, Amber Greenhalgh and her parents Bart and Tina Bardell and the Greenhalgh family. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Scott Threet; Jay and Edna Killian; and Jay “Buddy” Killian Jr.

Paul Kattnig
Paul Harry Kattnig died Nov. 22, 2009 at age 75.
He was born April 27, 1934 in Florence to Pearl (Bone) and Martin Kattnig and was a Florence High School graduate.
Kattnig married and settled in the Canon City area to rais his family. He and his wife, Nancy, served as co-leaders of the Tally-Ho 4-H Club. His two favorite 4-H projects he enjoyed serving as a leader for included Wildlife and Gardening.
In 1979 his family was honored as 4-H Family of the Year.
In addition to 4-H, Kattnig was also actively involved with Boy Scout Troop 122 and a member of the Royal Gorge Promenaders Square Dance Club.
In 1986, Kattnig retired from U.S. West after 34 years of service.
Kattnig’s hobbies included gardening, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing and traveling.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy; daughter, Debra (Roy Fowler); sons, Paul Jr. (Ingrid) and Todd (Veronica); grandchildren, Keegan (Tara), John, Rebecca, Tennille (Avery Burton), Justin, Adam, Kirsten, Jeff and Steve; great grandson, Tyler; sisters, Nita Jo Schultz and Mona Yellico; brothers, Martin Jr. and Franklin; and several neices and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Katherine (Archie) Westfall.

Albert J. Zaveral
Albert J. Zaveral died Oct. 29, 2009 at age 90 in Canon City.
He was born Sept. 19, 1919 in Salida to Frank and Mary (Porlogar) Zaveral. He moved to Canon City as a child and attended Garfield and Madison Schools. Zaveral worked for A. C. Sonneland for years and eventually decided to open his own butcher shop. He worked as a meat cutter as long as his health permitted.
He supported the local 4-H program by purchasing animals from the 4-H livestock sale for his business.
On Aug. 9, 1946 Zaveral married his wife Pauline Palermo of Penrose. He was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Canon City.
Zaveral is preceeded in death by his wife; parents; sister, Mary Lippis; brothers, Frank Zaveral Sr. and Joe Zaveral; and a niece, Barbara Lippis.
He is survived by his nephews, Anthony (Joan) Lippis and Joseph (Sandra) Lippis, Frank (Stephanie) Zaveral Jr.; neices, Elizabeth (Robert) Burtzos and Rosemary Cahall; great nephews, Ray (Vicky) Lippis, Roy (Rhonda) Lippis, George Lippis, Joe Lippis, Alex Zaveral and Brian Cahall; and great nieces, Rebecca Munch and Rhonda (Lippis) Moschetti.

Shawn Corey Smith
Shawn Corey Smith was born April 28, 1976 in Pueblo and died Sept. 13, 2009 in Penrose.
He is survived by his wife, Amber; daughters, Brittany, Brooke and Jordyn; step- children, Dillon, Haileigh and Coy; his father, Rocky (Sheryl) Smith; mother, Roxanne (Ted) Chasten; brothers, Randy (Mary) Smith, Jody (Sherry) Evango; and his sister, Missy (Mike) Johnson.
He was preceeded in death by R.J. Trainham and Bert Smith.
Shawn was a 1994 graduate of Canon City High School. He was almost always seen with his family and enjoyed the outdoors. | | Nancy Smotherman
Nancy was born on Sept. 20, 1960, in Lamar to Joe H. and Betty F. (Wilson) Perkins, Jr. and died on Jan. 11, 2010, at Sangre de Cristo Hospice of Pueblo, with her family by her side at the age of 49.
Nancy is preceded in death by her father; Joe H. Perkins, Jr. and her brother, Tracy E. Perkins.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Smotherman of Penrose; her children, Dustin (Tana) Pearson, Chris (Yasmin) Pearson all of Lamar, and Josey Smotherman of Penrose; and grandchildren, Caleb, Avelina, Kiera, Kevin and James. Nancy is also survived by her mother, Betty Perkins of Lamar; her uncles, JD and Le Etta Wilson of Walsh, Lloyd Perkins of Yuma, Arizona; her aunts, Catherine Terrell of Haysville, Kansas, Stella Moser of Denver; and mother-in-law, Nadine (Ray) Hays of Lamar as well as her nieces, nephews and many friends. |
